Who We Are2020-06-22T19:16:24-06:00

Quadrant specializes in financial services for privately owned and operated business and not-for-profit organizations. We are a team of Chartered Professional Accountants, but our services are not limited to taxes and accounting. We also provide consulting services related to business start-ups, management and analysis of cash flow, shareholder and partnership issues, business purchases, and personal tax and wealth management assistance. Any type of financial need our clients bring to us, we ensure that we find the right solution.

  • Our partners have over 40 years of combined professional experience as Chartered Professional Accountants and as business owners, allowing us to provide professional expertise and advice.
  • We work closely with other service providers, such as bankers, lawyers, financial planners, and trustees, ensuring that we provide our clients with comprehensive service that is often out of reach for small businesses.
  • Our clients are located in Canada and abroad, making us familiar with accounting rules and guidelines, so we can assist our clients with any business ventures in foreign jurisdictions.

What We Do

Quadrant specializes in working with small to mid-sized entrepreneurial clients. They strive to provide their clients with comprehensive service, assisting them with any financial needs they have in the four quadrants. Working closely with their clients has allowed them to build a relationship where they can act as partners in their clients’ financial and business affairs. Mike focuses in taxation and business valuation needs, and Derek and Ken focus on tax and estate planning.

With over forty years of combined experience in the profession, the leadership team at Quadrant can relate to many of the financial situations that their clients encounter and confidently provide the necessary professional advice.

Quadrant Accounting was formed through the collaboration of Mike Shackleton and Derek Boniecki, after working together at a mid-sized Chartered Accountant (CA) firm in Calgary for 15 years. Kenneth Lin joined as partner later on, previously working with Mike and Derek for 6 years. Their professional dynamic has allowed them to create a unique accounting firm specializing in four ‘quadrants’: tax, accounting, business valuation, and wealth planning.

The leadership team at Quadrant are Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) who have completed the CICA In-Depth Tax Course. Driven by their need to assist clients in all aspects of their financial needs, Mike and Derek have both earned their Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation, and Mike is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Mike and Ken both graduated from Mount Royal University, in 1989 and 2005, respectively. Derek graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1994, and earned his Master’s Degree in Accounting the next year. Following their education, and prior to the formation of Quadrant, all three partners experienced working with the owners of private businesses in various industries while employed at a prestigious accounting firm.

Quadrant believes in giving back to the community and supports many local organizations. The company is involved with the Richard Schulli Memorial scholarship and the sponsorship of children’s education in Nepal. Mike volunteers his free time by serving as a treasurer of the Calgary Archer’s organization. Derek is a volunteer for the Canada Youth Business Foundation, treasurer of the Mavericks Chuckwagon Racing team, and sits on the executive board of the Big-Hearted Cowboys Foundation. Ken is a volunteer for the Haskayne School of Business Mentorship Program and the Bissett School of Business Alumni Chapter.

Quadrant Chartered Professional Accountants funds a $2,500 scholarship that is awarded annually to a third or fourth year student pursuing an undergraduate degree in business or commerce with a declared major in accounting. This scholarship is administered through the Chartered Professional Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta and is open to students attending any post-secondary institution in Alberta. Selection is based on involvement in volunteer activities (preferably in a mentorship role), satisfactory academic achievement in the prior year of study, and an expressed interest in pursuing the CPA designation.

Learn more

During one of Derek’s trip to Nepal he met a man named Kumar Gutam who told him a story about a man in the village. The man injured himself while working as a porter for a climbing expedition and suffered serious injury and was unable to work. Consequently, he was unable to pay for his children’s education. Quadrant has decided to take on the funding for Ashok, the man’s seven year old son, and his sister’s education and will continue to do so until they have finished their studies. Unfortunately, the living conditions in Nepal do not allow many children to attend school. We believe that if we can make a difference in one family’s life, they can one day support the other children in the village and provide them with a similar opportunity.

If you wish to learn more or get involved in this project, please contact Derek. Here are some pictures from his latest trip to Nepal.
